Airport with growing pains

Billund Airport in mainland Jutland is Denmark’s second largest international airport with about two million passengers, more than 50,000 take-off and landings and a steady increase in cargo, close to 50,000 tonnes a year.

Airport with growing pains

With almost 70 percent of Denmark’s export industries within its catchment area, and efficient interfaces with all modes of transportation, Billund is playing an increasingly important role in the infrastructure of Northern Europe comprising the Nordic and Baltic regions and Northern Germany.

To cope with growing demand in all areas, Billund Airport is presently in the midst of a comprehensive construction program, worth almost almost DKK 1 bn (US$ 100 million), culminating in 2002 with the opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art 40,000 m2 passenger terminal with a planned annual maximum capacity at 4 million passengers when fully completed.

“Among the major assets of Billund Airport is transparency,” Head of Cargo Center Billund, Jan Ditlevsen says. “Even with continued growth in cargo volumes, number of operators and forwarders, and terminal facilities we strive to maintain Cargo Center Billund as a closely-knit cargo community. Our single, most convincing sales argument is ultra-short turn-around times, short lead-times and efficient air cargo handling services. It means close co-operation with forwarders, Danish Customs, Police, veterinary border control, air cargo trucking providers, and airline representatives. To name just the prime actors on the stage. They are all available at Cargo Center Billund. That’s what we call a cargo community.”

Cargo Center Billund presently comprises a total of 12,000 m2 terminal area. When the new airport passenger terminal is inaugurated by 2002, Cargo Center Billund will take over all existing buildings and areas, increasing total terminal floor space to 30,000 m2.

“The unsurpassed localisation with easy and fast access to all points in the Nordic, Baltic and Northern European regions combined with abundant space and ample capacity to grow with our customers’ need for distribution centre services, makes Bil-lund hard to beat,” Ditlevsen says.
