Photo; Inger Christensen, author Inger Christensen, born 1935, Danish author. Her first major work, the large suite of poems Det (1969, It) is a language-oriented, formalising expression of the principle of creation itself, that language and the world keep each other going in a dream of freedom in solidarity. The almost magically singing poem about fear and love, power and powerlessness had been in preparation since Lys (1962, Light) and Græs (1963, Grass) and was continued in prose novels (including Det malede værelse - 1976, The Painted Room - with a subject from Renaissance Mantua), essay writing and particularly the series of poems Alfabet (1981, Alphabet), which in accordance with the title combines the letter system with a mathematical sequence of numbers to form a development idea, likewise unfolded in a rich range of subjects. In Sommerfugledalen (1991, The Butterfly Valley) she explored the sonnet cycle and created glowingly beautiful poems about death and hope under the title symbol of the book, which suggests a transformation idea. With her prominent position, Inger Christensen has managed the traditions of modernism in moving poetry which has been translated into the principal languages.
