CONSULTATIVE RESEARCH COMMITTEE FOR DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH (FFU)
On the basis of the Danish Act on International Development Cooperation, section 12, the Minister for Development Cooperation has established the Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU). The purpose of FFU is to provide advice to the Minister for Development Cooperation on the strategic use of the research grants as well as strengthening the connection between research and development work.
FFU is a programme committee under the Danish Council for Strategic Research.
The purpose of the support for development research
In 2009 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark supports larger strategic research projects with budgets above 5 mill. DKK. as well as individual PhD- and postdoc. projects with budgets below 5 mill. DKK.
The objective of the support to research is to create knowledge, which can help promote the development cooperation's overall goal of reducing poverty.
Support can be granted to research projects in areas where research and new knowledge is relevant in relation to the development assistance and where the research contributes to solving problems in developing countries. It is furthermore important that the research projects contributes to an enhancement of countries' own research capacity as well as taking into account the countries' own needs and strategies.
Emphasis will not only be on the technical qualities of the research but also on its relevance to the development assistance.
The grants will only be awarded to projects which focus on developing countries that are below the World Bank's GNI limit of 2.470 US$ per capita (2007).
The grants focus primarily on Danish programme countries.
It is highly preferred that the PhD grants are incorporated as a part of larger research programmes.
Phd degrees for researchers from partner countries are only eligible for support if they are part of a larger strategic project and are attached to one of the partner institutions.
It is also possible to apply for financial support for preparation of larger research programmes in collaboration with institutions in developing countries through the special initiative funding.
