DENMARK HONORED AS THE SECOND MOST PEACEFUL NATION IN THE WORLD
Ambassador Mr. Friis Arne Petersen and Danish Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Mr. Klavs A. Holm attended a gala in Washington, DC on Sunday night where Denmark was honored as the second most peaceful nation in the world.
Denmark was ranked the second most peaceful nation in the world based on the Global Peace Index (GPI). The GPI, which ranked 144 countries in 2009, is a composite of 23 indicators, such as military spending, organized conflict, access to small arms, relations with neighboring countries and respect for human rights.
The world’s most peaceful nations were honored at a gala, which was part of a three day symposium in Washington, DC. The symposium was the first ever event to recognize, honor and study nations on the basis of their peacefulness. New Zealand ranked number one.
At the symposium representatives of the 18 most peaceful countries also engaged in a dialogue about how best to establish and maintain peace.
The symposium was arranged by the Fulbright Center and the Alliance for Peacebuilding.
