Women suffer the most from consequences of climate change. Gender issues must be considered as we react to climate changes. Today UNDP Administrator Helen Clark made a commitment to focus on gender and climate change as she received a MDG3 Torch from Danish Minister of Development Cooperation Ulla Toernaes.

Denmark condemns the verdict against Aung San Suu Kyi
Today, the military regime sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi and her two assistants to three years imprisonment for violating the terms of her house arrest. The sentence was immediately mitigated to 18 months under house arrest by the regime. Despite this reduction, the charges and the trial are regarded as the regime’s attempt to exclude Aung San Suu Kyi from participating in the elections scheduled for 2010.

Niger – democracy undermined, Danish development assistance on hold
Contrary to the Constitutional Court’s decision, President Tandja of Niger, on August 4, forced a referendum on a new constitution in a bid to hang on to power beyond his original term in office. The outcome of the referendum is as yet unknown, but the EU has already distanced itself from this latest attempt to undermine democratic institutions in Niger, including the Parliament and the Constitutional Court.

Developing countries must attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen
With an additional grant of 9.5 million Danish kroner to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Trust Fund for Participation, Denmark becomes the Fund’s largest contributor in the process leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December (COP15).
