The industrialization of Denmark began in the 1840s. The farmers and the landowners made more and more money from the increasing corn trade, the demand for crafted and industrial products increased, and the trade with foodstuffs like sugar, beer, spirits and flour was thriving.

Many people moved from the countryside to the cities. In the period 1860-1940 the number of cities rose from 83 to 628, and the population in the cities increased just as much.

The development of new technology makes the domestic market more dynamic. And the industrialization of Western Europe and USA puts more emphasis on export.

In 1875 railway construction is begun in Denmark, and that made it easier to transport foodstuffs for export. Simultaneously with the railway, the Danish telegraph net was built. The telegraph made it possible for many people to communicate, even if they lived far from each other. New steam ships were built, and the big harbours were improved in order to deal with the increase in transport.

As late as 1950, agricultural products and foodstuffs account for 85-90 % of the total Danish export. This proves that the growth of the industrialization was primarily due to the development of farming methods.
